User-Centric Solution

Duration

1 week

“ I used to say the best way to think about testing is that it’s like travel: a broadening experience. It reminds you how different — and the same — people are and  gives you a fresh perspective on things “

- Steve Krug

Goal

Find usability issues

Define solutions

Understand user behaviours

To conduct usability testing to review the navigation behaviours for the Trimble Connect Holo Lens application.

A usability test has been conducted with internal users to understand user behaviour and discover usability issues with the project navigation feature.

Users are both new and familiar with the devices.

About Project

Trimble Connect is a collaborative application for construction projects.

It enables the users to collaborate, view, access and update the BIM models. It can be accessible on all platforms.

Preparation & Usability Testing

Users were given the task of launching the ‘3D Trimble NEWZEELAND' model by opening the project name called ‘Astoria’.

Tasks were given to the participants in a meeting room in which the Holo Lens screen is projected to review how the participant interacts with UI and achieves the tasks live.

The screen was recorded for further reference

Participants' behaviour and verbal and physical expressions were observed and noted.

After testing was done, participants' feedback was also collected. While doing the tasks, clues were given if the participants got stuck.

Issues & Solutions

Gaze

Problem Statement

Tapping zone lesser for a user to make a selection of Hamburger icon.

Solution

It was difficult for the user to gaze at the small tapping zone. We proposed more gazing areas for interactive elements like tiles, icon buttons, and lists.

Scroll Behavior

Problem Statement

Users have trouble scrolling due to the project's location in the middle of the project card list.

Tap and Tap & hold gestures are overlapped:

In an attempt to scroll through project lists using the ‘tap and hold’ gesture, the user accidentally selects a project by tapping.

Users also suffered with hand pain since they needed to gaze hard due to tap zone issues. In addition, they sometimes accidentally select the project while tapping and holding down for scrolling. It made them do the task for a longer period of time.

Solution

To avoid accidental selection while scrolling over the tiles, a layer of the circle is created.

If the user moves the hand up and down, it leads to horizontal and vertical scrolling.

Search & Hand pain

Problem Statement

In Trimble Connect 'Search', the user types the text by gazing at and tapping the letter of the word, which causes hand pain.

Solution

The search bar is equipped with the option of voice search to avoid typing.

Icons & Bottom bar

Problem Statement

In the toolbar, functions are not labelled with names which are difficult for the user to understand what the functions do.

Solution

Functions are labelled with names for users to recognize the function.
